Private vs Public Social Media Links: What Downloaders Should Process

By SaveVideoDown Team•

A clear explanation of public and private links so users understand what SaveVideoDown should and should not process.

Public links are the limit

A safe downloader should process public links only. Public means the page opens normally in a browser without logging in, joining a group, being a friend, or receiving special permission.

If a link depends on private access, it is not a good candidate for a public downloader and SaveVideoDown will not process it. The tool checks whether the URL is reachable as a public resource before attempting any download.

How to tell if a link is public

Open the link in a private or incognito browser window where you are not logged in to any account. If the video or image loads and plays normally, the link is public. If you see a login prompt, an error message, a paywall, or a message saying the content is restricted, the link is private.

Platforms handle privacy differently. On TikTok, accounts can be set to private so only approved followers can see posts. On Instagram, accounts can be public or private, and individual posts can be further restricted. On Reddit, most posts are public but some communities are private and require membership.

What happens with private content

Private content should not be downloaded without the creator's explicit permission, even if you have access to it through your personal account. Having access as a follower or friend does not transfer the right to archive or download. Private content is shared under an expectation of limited distribution, and bypassing that expectation can violate platform terms and damage the trust of the creator.

Platform-specific notes

TikTok public videos are accessible to anyone with the link. Duets and stitches may have additional restrictions. Always check whether the original creator has restricted their content before processing.

Instagram public posts, reels, and stories on public accounts are generally accessible. However, Instagram stories are often temporary and the creator may not have intended them for long-term saving.

Reddit posts on public subreddits are accessible to anyone. Private subreddits require membership and their content should not be downloaded without the community's permission.

X (Twitter) public posts are accessible to anyone. Protected accounts restrict access to approved followers, and their tweets should not be downloaded.

The technical and ethical boundary

Just because a tool can technically process a link does not mean it should. The right test is whether the creator intended the content to be publicly available and whether your intended use is within what they would reasonably expect.
